The ancient town of Aswan, also known as Swenett or Syene, was the southernmost border town of Ancient Egypt. According to legend, the name Swenett comes from an Egyptian deity of the same name. As a result of the comparable associations of their goddesses with childbirth, and of which the import is "the opening," this goddess was later identified as Eileithyia by the Greeks and Lucina by the Romans during their occupation of Ancient Egypt. The Egyptian sign for "trade" or "market" is thought to have inspired the city's old name.
